Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry in Tulsa

Many people associate dental visits with fear or anxiety due to childhood trauma or memories of painful dental treatment. For a few people, even the sound of a dentist's drill is enough to trigger an alarmed reaction. However, many of these people may not be aware that most dental procedures can be performed without pain or discomfort thanks to the modern relaxation and sedation dentistry options offered at our Tulsa practice. Dr. Lebedoff and his entire team are highly trained in providing safe, effective sedation dentistry for all Tulsa patients, ensuring that even the most nervous of patients can get the treatment they need to maintain proper oral health and achieve a winning smile without unnecessary worry, stress, or pain.

Are You a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

While relaxation dentistry is not right for everyone, most people can benefit from pain-free treatment using one of the sedation options offered at our spa-like Tulsa practice. Dr. Lebedoff and his staff will review your medical history and help you decide whether relaxation dentistry is right for you.

You may be a suitable candidate for sedation dentistry at our Tulsa office if you have any of the following:

  • Dental anxiety
  • Dental phobias, such as fear of needles, shots, or drill sounds
  • Traumatic dental experiences in the past
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Easily triggered gag reflex
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Complex dental issues
  • Limited time
  • Difficulty controlling movement

You should alert our staff to any medications you are currently taking prior to any sedation dentistry procedure.

Because sedation dentistry relaxes so completely, it is ideal for patients who need extensive dental work that would normally require multiple office visits. At our Tulsa office, our sleep dentist can administer sedation with any number of treatments, such as porcelain veneerscrowns, or laser dentistry treatments. With sedation dentistry, we can handle several procedures during a single office visit, saving you the time and hassle of multiple appointments.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Perhaps the most widely-known dental sedation option, nitrous oxide (or laughing gas) has been used in dentistry for hundreds of years and remains one of the best and safest dental sedation methods today. A mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen is inhaled by the patient, who remains conscious but safely relaxed; most patients receiving this form of sedation report a feeling of lightheadedness, warmth, and overall well-being. Because you remain conscious, you will be able to interact with Dr. Lebedoff throughout your treatment, and if you ever feel it is necessary, the mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen can be adjusted to fit your needs. The effects of nitrous oxide dissipate quickly, so most patients who choose this sedation method are able to drive themselves home following their treatment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

More and more patients are discovering the benefits of orally administered conscious sedation. With this method, an oral sedative is taken in either pill or liquid form about an hour before your appointment so that by the time you meet with Dr. Lebedoff, you will be thoroughly relaxed and prepared for your treatment. While this sedation option is often referred to as sleep dentistry, you will not actually be asleep during your treatment, and you will be monitored by our highly-trained staff at all times to ensure your safety. Though you will be in a very deep state of relaxation, you will be able to respond to questions during your treatment, and because there is often an amnesiac effect to oral sedation, most patients recall little or nothing about their treatment afterwards. Following your appointment, a friend or family member will be required to drive you home. After the sedation wears off, you will have a rejuvenated smile and only pleasant memories (if any) of your dental visit.
