Preventative Dentistry

Routine Dental Care

Good oral health enhances our ability to speak, smile, eat, and show our emotions through facial expressions. Preventive oral habits, such as regular dental care and good oral hygiene, developed early in life can lead to better overall health throughout a person’s life.

Preventive Dentistry keeps teeth clean at any age. It is the oral care that involves education, treatment and practice of maintaining your teeth and gums. From daily brushing to annual dental cleanings, these tasks are designed to avoid gum disease, cavities, and enamel wear, which often lead to sensitivity.

Professional Teeth Cleanings & Exams

Even if you don’t have any pressing dental concerns, regular dental cleanings and exams are imperative to your overall oral health. It should be an appointment that is regularly scheduled every 6 months. Patients who have gum disease should schedule more thorough dental cleaning every 3-4 months to help slow the progression of gum disease. During these appointments, we evaluate your overall oral health – take X-rays’ remove stains, plaque, and tartar; polish your teeth; and our doctors will provide an oral cancer screening. You can expect these appointments to take approximately 90 minutes for New Patients or 60 minutes for returning patients.

Dental Sealants

Think of them as a raincoat for your teeth. When the cavity-causing bacteria that live in everyone’s mouth meet leftover food particles, they produce acids that can create holes in teeth. These holes are cavities. After a sealant has been applied it keeps those bits of food out and stops bacteria and acid from settling on your teeth- just like a raincoat keep you clean and dry during a storm. Sealants are a quick, in-office procedure that can significantly reduce your chances of tooth decay. Sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of decay by nearly 80% in molars. This is especially important for a child’s dental health because without sealants they have almost three times more cavities than children with sealants.

Periodontal Therapy

Three out of four adults are affected by periodontal – or gum disease –  at some point in their lives. Periodontal disease is caused by bacterial plaque — a colorless film that coats your teeth and extends down below the gum-line. Left unimpeded, plaque hardens into tartar (also known as calculus). Daily brushing and flossing can help prevent periodontal – or gum disease. However, once present, periodontal disease cannot be eliminated. At Monticello Family Dental we care about preventive dentistry and know that it is important for you and your family as well. We will help you every step of the way to preventing the start of gum disease and keeping it from progressing if it’s something you already have. Treatments can include scaling, root planing, and antibiotic therapies.
